South Quartet

Behind the South Quartet are four gifted individualists from Germany’s wild south – experienced, confident and stylistically independent.
In mutual artistic agreement but also interspersed with playful provocations and stimulating contrasts, the four musicians engage in a lively exchange of creative ideas.
Ull Möck acts virtuosically and sensitively on the piano, Simon Schallwig provides the foundation on the double bass and Matthias Daneck grooves lively and tirelessly on the drums. They are extremely inspired and varied in their respective roles. Consistently avoiding standardized accompaniment patterns, always on the go, always good for surprises and always keeping the big picture in mind, they constantly challenge the audience’s attention. Jazz trumpeter Peer Baierlein sets the melodic structures and formal cornerstones with his assertive and characteristic, sometimes soft, sometimes robust sound.
The four musicians belong to a generation of musicians who have no prejudices, who only play their own compositions, but who continue with tradition and at the same time venture into unknown territory with the help of new means.

NEWS

JUN 25

Our May-Tour was fantastic.

It’s becoming increasingly difficult to even get gigs these days and you really have to fight for every single jazz listener – but in return, we were rewarded with lovely new connections, many happy faces, and heartfelt comments.

One of those new connections was Volker Collmann, who created an incredibly cool drawing of our concert at the Alte Druckerei in Ottensen (see at the right).

The press also received our music with great enthusiasm – the review (also see at the right) made us very happy!

Our tour with the South Quartet in May 2025 across Hamburg and the surrounding region was a huge success – with fantastic venues, an incredible atmosphere and an enthusiastic audience every night.

Thank you to everyone who came out and made our performances so special – this is exactly why we do what we do!

👉 If you want to stay updated on future shows, feel free to sign up for our newsletter. That way, you’ll never miss a date!

In January, we’ll be touring again in northern Germany and would be thrilled if you’re nearby and can come by! You can find all the dates again under the „Live“ section (a bit further down on this site).

After two trips to northern Germany, we had the last concert of our 3-day tour with the ‚South Quartet‘ yesterday, which brought us back to our southern hometowns of Friedrichshafen, Biberach, and Lahr.
It was truly wonderful days, filled with heartwarming encounters with incredibly kind organizers, audiences, friends, acquaintances, and family. There was great food, many CDs sold, and, of course, lots of amazing music.
In May, we’ll be back on the road – this time around Hamburg and the surrounding area.
